Dear Mr Smith,

Thank you for your letter of 15 July 2008 for the attention of Professor Gallagher. He has asked me to reply on his behalf.

We are grateful for your comments on the Gallagher review and have noted the concern you have expressed about the analysis in the review of your discussion paper that appeared in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Discussions, 7, 11191-11205, 2007.  I have passed your comments to the team at North Energy who conducted this analysis for their consideration.

The North Energy assessment focussed on the usefulness of your paper in life cycle analysis, which North Energy felt was low. However, we recognise the potential importance of your paper's underlying conclusions, and, as I mentioned in our telephone conversation, we would be very keen to progress discussions on your paper and its implications in conjunction with Defra scientists. We are currently in the process of considering our research priorities for next year, and it would be very helpful to meet in the near future to consider how best to progress work for assessing N2O emissions, including indirect emissions, moving forward. I understand that you have been in contact with Katherine Bass at Defra with a view to arranging a meeting.

Yours sincerely
